BoxWise were extremely fortunate to welcome Dokun, a BoxWise Graduate to the team as our first 3 month administrative assistant intern. Below, Dokun shares his experience of joining the BoxWise team earlier this year.
Boxing is more than just fighting. It can open a pathway to many opportunities whether it will be a career in the ring, finding your passion or achieving your goals. I first started learning how to box in 2020 out of curiosity. I started attending Rathbone ABC which was the first boxing gym I went to when lockdown restrictions eased. This is a gym I still attend to this day. I first heard about BoxWise back in 2021. I decided to participate out of curiosity. I had no idea how it would it have an impact on me later. I then had the opportunity to work with BoxWise between January and April this year and I am glad that got the opportunity.
I first heard about the administration assistant role when BoxWise advertised it on Instagram. I finished another temporary role recently and I decided to apply for the role despite having no experience. After a short zoom call with the team, I got offered the role afterwards which I gladly accepted.
Despite my short stint, I enjoyed my time with BoxWise. Everyone is very outgoing and welcoming. I felt welcomed and they will make sure you feel welcome. Because this is a small team, I felt like I am playing an important role for BoxWise. You get the opportunity to develop, improve and showcase your skills as well as upskill yourself. For example, I completed a social media course which focused on some of the fundamentals of some of the social media platforms as well as some helpful tips when using them. I was able to put my creativity into use over what I can put down on Instagram and Twitter (X). For some of the posts, it will be up to me to decide what write in the caption as well as some of the hashtags.
This role has put me in a position where I was able to develop and improve some of my skills. Some of these skills can be transferable to any other industry such as the tech industry. While working, I have been identifying some of the skills that I have used based on the tasks I have been completing. They include my research skills, my communication skills and my presentation skills. They are skills that can help me stand out. Furthermore, it has helped me remain productive and has helped me keep my mind off other priorities. I am in the process of finding long term employment and taking the administrative assistant role has not only helped me improve my skills, but it has also helped me prepare for any future roles.
There are some things that I will be taking away. I have an improved understanding on social media and the role it plays in a business (whether it's a big or small organisation). Social media is a powerful tool for a business, and it is important to get your message across. Today, social media is one of the main ingredients needed to expand your organisation and there are plenty of platforms that can help you achieve that goal. I will also be taking away the experience. I believe this role will be vital to me getting a permanent job. Finally, I have gained a new perspective on BoxWise becoming aware of some of the tasks done behind the scenes to make the sessions successful. I would like to say thank you to Tori, Scott and the rest of the BoxWise team for giving me the opportunity to work. They have now a role in my professional journey.
My message regarding BoxWise. For the programme, go for it. It has improved significantly since I took part. After the course there are plenty of opportunities to upskill and achieve your goals. Also, you will fall in love with the art of boxing. If you see a job advertisement on BoxWise, don't hesitate to apply. You might find out something about yourself and it could play a role in your career journey It could give you the experience needed in your career, and it won't take long for you to adapt to into the role.
